DESCRIPTION:Calling all history nerds and trivia champs!\nJoin us for an evening of virtual trivia at the Concord Museum on Thursday\, February 18!  Test your knowledge of American history\, geography\, and all things Concord in this friendly competition.  You can play individually\, or team up with members of your household.  Trivia categories will include: \n\nWho’s the President?\nWomen of Concord\nGeoPlunge: Where History and Geography Intersect\nNew Beginnings: Inventions and Inventors\n\nWith six rounds of five questions each\, even the biggest history buffs are sure to learn something new.  Think fast to answer correctly and score the most points\, and be among the top three players to win a fun trivia-themed prize! \nWe are pleased to partner with LearningPlunge to offer this trivia night. \nRegistration\nRegister below to receive the zoom link to join the game!  The morning of the event\, you will receive an email with detailed instructions and an assigned player number\, which you will use when logging on for the event.  Participants will be muted upon entry and can choose to have their video on or off.  Answers will be submitted via the chat feature.  Trivia will begin at 7:00pm.  To ensure a prompt start to the evening\, check-in will begin at 6:45pm. \nTeam Registration: For logistical reasons\, we recommend teams be formed with members of your household\, and that your team joins the event together from one device.  If you are registering for a team that will require multiple log-ins (ie-team members in different locations)\, please email elawrence@concordmuseum.org to let us know so we can assign your number properly.

SUMMARY:Recounting Slavery in Historic Houses and Museums
DESCRIPTION:As the Concord Museum installs a new permanent gallery to chronicle the history of slavery in our town and the efforts to abolish it\, join us for a conversation with Kyera Singleton (Executive Director of The Royall House and Slave Quarters) and Niya Bates (public historian at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello) as they discuss the challenges museums and historic houses face in order to\, in the words of Kyera Singleton\, “memorialize the lives of the enslaved and to give people the tools to reckon with our current moment.” \nKyera Singleton is Executive Director of Royall House and Slave Quarters. She is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of American culture at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor\, and currently a dissertation fellow in the history department at Harvard University. She has previously held academic fellowships from Emory University and the American Association of University Women. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in American studies and women’s gender and sexuality studies from Macalester College. \n \nNiya Bates is a Ph.D. student in the department of history at Princeton University.  Niya earned both a B.A. in African and African American Studies and an M.A. in Architectural History from the University of Virginia. She holds a certificate in historic preservation\, also from UVA. Prior to becoming a student at Princeton\, she was a public historian at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello where she was director of the Getting Word African American Oral History Project\, which was designed to document oral histories of people descended from the enslaved communities at Monticello. \nDonations are encouraged to support the Concord Museum’s Education initiatives. \nThis program is in partnership with The Robbins House and is supported in part by the Sally Lanagan Fund.

DESCRIPTION:251 years ago this March\, British soldiers shot into a crowd and killed five civilians outside Boston’s Old State House on a blustery night in 1770. In her new book on the Boston Massacre\, Serena Zabin\, professor of history at Carleton College\, offers a unique view of the British occupation of Boston highlighting that the British army at that time was a family institution with soldiers being accompanied by their wives and children\, who lived side-by-side (and often in common cause) with their fellow Bostonians. DESCRIPTION:“I haven’t a man who is afraid to go!” The Acton Minutemen mustered and marched to the North Bridge on the morning of April 19\, 1775 where\, under the leadership of Captain Isaac Davis\, were first in line of 450 Provincials who advanced on the British Regulars.  Both Provincials who died at the North Bridge – Isaac Davis and Abner Hosmer – were Acton Minutemen.  Visit this brave minute company in an encampment outside the Concord Museum on Patriots’ Day and see them prepare for battle! \nThe health and safety of our staff and visitors is our highest priority.  Participants can visit this outdoor\, unenclosed event throughout the day without advanced registration.  Museum staff will enforce capacity limitations for this outdoor gathering as outlined under Massachusetts law.  Visitors and staff will do all that they can to maintain space and be mindful of one another. \n \nThank you in advance for social distancing and wearing masks at this outdoor event! \nThis is a free event. \nVisit inside the Concord Museum to see Acton Minuteman Abner Hosmer’s powder horn\, which he carried into battle with him on April 19\, 1775.  Reserve tickets for Museum admission here.  Museum capacity is limited\, so please book your timeslot in advance!

Follow the trails along the Concord River carved by noted ornithologist and naturalist William Brewster and his assistant\, constant companion\, and the first African American landscape photographer Robert Gilbert with a Museum guide. 1-mile walk\, mostly flat terrain\, rain or shine. Over 20 years ago\, Jane Swift became Governor of Massachusetts and the first sitting Governor to give birth while in office. Since that time we’ve seen the election of our nation’s first woman as Vice President and the state’s first female United States Senator\, and\, most recently\, the first woman to serve as the mayor of Boston. SUMMARY:Every Path Laid Open: Women of Concord and the Quest for Equality
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn 1845\, feminist Margaret Fuller described the ultimate goal of women’s suffrage: “We would have every path laid open to Woman as freely as to Man.” Spoken seventy-five years before American women had the legal right to vote in national elections\, Fuller’s rallying cry inspired a movement for women’s equality that continues today. \nIn Concord\, Massachusetts\, generations of women – some famous and some almost invisible – fought for their right to work and live how they pleased\, often in defiance of tradition and propriety. They campaigned\, organized\, and advocated to expand their liberties and the liberties of others. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, this exhibition celebrated their remarkable achievements. \nRecognizing the progress that has been made in empowering women to take “every path\,” the exhibition also celebrated today’s women of Concord— from educators to entrepreneurs\, firefighters to farmers\, and artists to activists— through a special media component in the exhibition. While not meant to be comprehensive\, the variety of these women’s endeavors and the vision\, passion\, and courage with which they have pursued them convey the benefits and enrichments of women’s expanded opportunities as envisioned by Margaret Fuller over 150 years ago. \n
