SUMMARY:Liberty and Loyalty: Embroidered Coats of Arms in an Age of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In 1775\, Mary Jones of Weston Massachusetts watched her life collapse around her as her family\, all supporters of the British Crown\, fled their homes and had their immense fortune confiscated during the Revolution. Among what she had left to remember them was a mostly finished needlework sampler displaying the Jones family coat of arms. Years later\, she returned to Massachusetts and settled in Concord\, where this sampler now resides in the collection of the Concord Museum. \nErica Lome\, PhD\, Associate Curator at Historic New England\, uses this needlework as a starting point to survey the history of embroidered coats of arms worked in Boston in the late eighteenth century. More than an accomplishment of a genteel education\, heraldic needlework was created by young women to document their family genealogy\, a practice that endured through war\, exile\, and independence. Join us to hear more stories about needlework\, women\, family\, and legacy in an age of Revolution. \nThis program is being held in-person at the Concord Museum.  Please register using the form below. \n  \nFeatured Image: Needlework by Mary Jones\, 1760-1770. SUMMARY:Revolution in Women’s Athletics
DESCRIPTION:At the Concord Museum\, history is both preserved through its extensive collection and “made new” through its engaging\, interactive exhibitions and extensive public programming.  We are proud to introduce the Rebels and Revolutionaries speaker series\, which seeks to emphasize the Museum’s dedication to the spirit of revolution through individuals making history in the present\, in ways large and small. \nTo launch Rebels and Revolutionaries\, Olympians AJ Mleczko Griswold and Angela Ruggiero will discuss their experiences as elite athletes\, the future of girls’ and women’s athletics\, and the role of women in inspiring the next generation of athletes.  They will share their journey from the locker room to the board room and the odds-defying leadership and perseverance that led to outstanding careers on the ice and beyond. \nAJ Mleczko Griswold is an Olympic gold medalist ice hockey player and commentator on ESPN. She was inducted into the New England Women’s Hall of Fame; received the second Patty Kazmaier Award\, awarded annually to the best female college ice hockey player in the United States; and\, while working for NBC\, was the first woman to commentate for an NHL playoff game. \nFour-time Olympian\, gold medalist\, and hall-of-famer\, Angela Ruggiero is a former ice hockey player once named the best player in the world by The Hockey News and US Olympic Committee’s Player of the Year. She is currently the CEO and co-founder of Sports Innovation Lab\, a technology-powered firm leading the sports industry. \nFollowing the program\, a limited group will join the speakers for a wine and cheese reception. Tickets to the reception are limited; reserve early. \nCo-sponsored by the Concord Contemporary Leaders\, a dynamic group of Museum enthusiasts\, supporters\, and advocates\, ages 30-55. \n \n
