SUMMARY:Every Path Laid Open: Women of Concord and the Quest for Equality
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn 1845\, feminist Margaret Fuller described the ultimate goal of women’s suffrage: “We would have every path laid open to Woman as freely as to Man.” Spoken seventy-five years before American women had the legal right to vote in national elections\, Fuller’s rallying cry inspired a movement for women’s equality that continues today. \nIn Concord\, Massachusetts\, generations of women – some famous and some almost invisible – fought for their right to work and live how they pleased\, often in defiance of tradition and propriety. They campaigned\, organized\, and advocated to expand their liberties and the liberties of others. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, this exhibition celebrated their remarkable achievements. \nRecognizing the progress that has been made in empowering women to take “every path\,” the exhibition also celebrated today’s women of Concord— from educators to entrepreneurs\, firefighters to farmers\, and artists to activists— through a special media component in the exhibition. While not meant to be comprehensive\, the variety of these women’s endeavors and the vision\, passion\, and courage with which they have pursued them convey the benefits and enrichments of women’s expanded opportunities as envisioned by Margaret Fuller over 150 years ago. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual presentation and networking breakfast to discuss the challenges women face in the workplace\, and the bridges we can build to the future as we emerge from lock-down.\nFor women at work\, what has been lost and what new pathways and opportunities have opened because of the pandemic?\nThis framing question will guide the morning’s discussion.  First\, speaker Addie Swartz\, reacHIRE Founder and CEO\, will share her perspectives as an expert in supporting and advancing women at work.  Next\, participants will engage in small group discussions with fellow working women to share their own experiences and ideas. \nAddie Swartz\, ReacHIRE CEO and Founder\n \nAs CEO of reacHIRE\, Addie Swartz works with Fortune 500 companies to create opportunities for women at all ages and stages of their careers. From return-to-work programs with industry leaders including Fidelity\, Wayfair\, Deloitte\, and T-Mobile\, to the innovative Aurora digital platform for engaging and retaining women\, Addie is a leading voice on how to support and advance women at work. \nPrior to reacHIRE\, Addie founded two female-focused businesses at the intersection of media\, technology\, and education. The Beacon Street Girls® book series provided positive role models and empowerment for tween girls\, while BrightIdeas® was the first company to leverage a stay-at-home-mom salesforce to sell children’s educational software. \nAddie is a proud resident of Concord\, Massachusetts and has lived there for 27 years\, raising two daughters with her husband Joel Rosen. While launching the book series The Beacon Street Girls®\, Addie was inspired by Concord legend Louisa May Alcott. She enjoyed frequent visits to the Orchard House and talking with Executive Director Jan Turnquist to learn more about Alcott’s confidence and inspirational female characters that inspired so many. \nAs a member of the Museum of Science Boston Board of Advisors\, Addie works with community leaders as a member of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Committee. She serves as Co-Chair of Women in Leadership\, an initiative of the Massachusetts High Tech Council to capture best practices in recruiting\, retaining and promoting women into leadership positions. Her insights about women and careers are routinely featured in top tier local and national media. \nAddie is a graduate of Stanford University and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. DESCRIPTION:Join Sara Seager\, an astrophysicist and a professor of planetary science at MIT\, as she discusses her memoir\, The Smallest Lights in the Universe\, in which she recounts her successful efforts to rebuild her life in the wake of tragedy — discovering the power of connection on this planet\, even as she searches our galaxy for another Earth.  After the unexpected death of her husband\, Professor Seager finds solace in the alien beauty of exoplanets and the technical challenges of exploration. Born and raised in Concord\, she followed in her mother’s footsteps as an antislavery activist. After the Civil War\, Ellen taught newly freed people during Reconstruction and tested the nation’s first Civil Rights Act in court after she was prevented by authorities from desegregating a train station waiting room in Baltimore.
