SUMMARY:Family Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join the Concord Museum in celebrating the award-winning 23rd Annual Family Trees: A Celebration of Children’s Literature open daily – now through January 1\, 2019. \nAdmire 31 fancifully decorated Holiday Trees and Wreaths inspired by themes from children’s literature throughout the Concord Museum’s new Rasmussen Education Center. \nA love of books and reading is a lifelong treasure passed from adult to child\, from generation to generation. Family Trees: A Celebration of Children’s Literature at the Concord Museum in historic Concord\, Massachusetts gives Concord’s renowned literary tradition a creative twist.  During the holiday season the Museum decorates more than 30 fanciful trees and wreaths – of all shapes and sizes – with original ornaments inspired by acclaimed children’s storybooks and contemporary picture book favorites. \n2018 marks the 23rd year of the Concord Museum’s award-winning Family Trees: A Celebration of Children’s Literature\, organized by the Guild of Volunteers with Patty Flint and Pam Nelson as co-chairs. This fall\, the Museum will be celebrating the opening of a new Education Center designed by the Boston architectural firm designLAB and we are pleased that the Family Trees tradition will continue in this beautiful new building. \nVisitors to Family Trees will be welcomed by outdoor trees in the new courtyard and orchard.  Then\, in the new welcome area and in three purpose-built classrooms\, trees and wreaths will share the space with specially-installed classroom galleries housing some of the Museum’s renowned collection of historical artifacts.  Finally\, the spacious new community Lyceum will be literally a forest of trees large and small. All will be decorated as visitors have come to expect with whimsical ornaments that bring to life classic and contemporary children’s books. \nThe exhibition’s focus on children’s literature makes Family Trees unique among the many holiday events in Greater Boston. Each tree serves as a canvas for the artistic creations of a dedicated team of volunteer decorators. Inspired by the storyline\, the illustrations\, the characters or setting of a particular book\, the decorators let their imaginations take flight\, much to the delight of visitors of all ages from all over New England. \n \nMelissa Sweet as Honorary Chair for Concord Museum’s 2018 Family Trees\n \nThe Concord Museum is pleased to have celebrated children’s book author and illustrator Melissa Sweet serve as this year’s Honorary Chair of the exhibition.   Since 1990\, Ms. Sweet has made a distinct mark in the world of children’s literature\, authoring and illustrating nearly 100 children’s books from board books to picture books and nonfiction titles. She has received two Caldecott Honor Medals and two New York Times Best Illustrated citations. She will be in attendance at the December 9th Author and Illustrator Day. \nA complete list of this year’s featured books may be found here.\nMost of the books featured in this year’s Family Treescan be purchased at the Museum Shop! \nProceeds from Family Trees\, organized by the Museum’s Guild of Volunteers\, benefit the Concord Museum’s education initiatives. \n  \n2018 Family Trees Lead Sponsor\n\n \n2018 Supporting Sponsor\nGeorge Vassel Jewelers \n2018 Friend Sponsor\n\n2018 Media Sponsor

SUMMARY:Slavery’s Determined Foe: Amanda Gilvin and Laura McDonald on the Legacy of John Brown
DESCRIPTION:Concord is home to the flashpoint of a revolution\, discussions of protest\, peace and war\, and the people who defined American ideals. Inspired by this past\, the Concord Perspectives series uses history as a lens to analyze present issues of power\, protest\, and society. This presentation brings together two scholars to discuss John Brown\, the complex figure who led the raid on Harpers Ferry and inspired Concordians like Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. \nDr. Amanda Gilvin will discuss the Davis Museum’s Fall 2018 exhibition\, Jacob Lawrence: The Legend of John Brown. The famous artist created his fifth series of history paintings in gouache on the famous abolitionist in 1941. Lawrence then made a portfolio of screen prints based on the series in 1974. Through his distinctive visual style and carefully researched titles\, Lawrence portrayed a complex\, imperfect hero. \nAmanda Gilvin is an art historian and curator who writes about textiles\, contemporary art\, and museums of Africa and the African Diaspora.  She is an Assistant Curator at the Davis Museum at Wellesley College. \nLaura McDonald will present on the a bust of the late abolitionist John Brown recently rediscovered at Tufts University\, and which stands as a symbol of Brown’s ardent fight against slavery and his pivotal role in the events leading up to the beginnings of the Civil War. The official unveiling of the bust occurred on the evening of New Year’s Day in 1863 during a commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation and an event to honor the memory of John Brown. Among those invited were Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Franklin Sanborn\, Julia Ward Howe\, Bronson Alcott\, and William Lloyd Garrison. \nLaura McDonald is the Art Collection Registrar at Tufts University in Medford\, Massachusetts and she oversees the registration\, management\, installation and logistics for a collection spread across four campuses and sited in over 50 buildings. \nMembers free\, Nonmembers $5. \nSnow Date: Tuesday\, January 29th 7:00-8:00 p.m. \nImage caption: Edward Augustus Brackett\, John Brown\, 1860\, marble\, Tufts University Permanent Collection:Gift of the Stearns Estate\, Photo courtesy: Christian Whitworth \nTo register\, fill out the form below.

SUMMARY:Concord Perspectives: The Garrison Men in Images and Objects
DESCRIPTION:Concord is home to the flashpoint of a revolution\, discussions of protest\, peace and war\, and the people who defined American ideals. Inspired by this past\, the Concord Perspectives Series consists of lectures and panel discussions which use history as a lens to analyze present issues of power\, protest\, and society. \nModerated by Maria Madison of the Robbins House\, join us for a special look at Jack and John Garrison\, father and son whose lives as both free and enslaved men are deeply intertwined with the history of Concord in the 1800s. John Hannigan\, Head of Reference Services at the Massachusetts Archives and long-time scholar at the Robbins House\, will bring to life the story of Jack and John Garrison\, whose walking stick and photograph are in the Concord Museum’s collection. L’Merchie Frazier\, Director of Education and Interpretation at the Museum of African American History (Boston and Nantucket) will share why identified images of African Americans\, like those of the Garrisons\, are so rare and what we can learn from their photographs. \nThis program is in partnership with the Old Manse and the Robbins House. \nThis event will be held from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Churchill and Janet Franklin Lyceum at the Rasmussen Education Center at the Concord Museum. \nThis is a free event\, but we appreciate your advanced registration below. \n
