SUMMARY:Girl in Black and White: The Story of Mary Mildred Williams and the Abolition Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with author Jessie Morgan-Owens\, as she discusses her book Girl in Black And White: The Story of Mary Mildred Williams and the Abolition Movement—the story of Mary Mildred Williams\, an enslaved girl who looked “white\,” is little-known\, but her photograph transformed the abolitionist movement. \n  \nWhen a decades-long court battle resulted in her family’s freedom in 1855\, seven-year-old Mary Mildred Williams unexpectedly became the face of American slavery. During a sold-out abolitionist lecture series\, Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner paraded Mary in front of rapt audiences as evidence that slavery knew no bounds. \nJessie Morgan-Owens is the dean of studies at Bard Early College in New Orleans\, Louisiana. A photographer with the team Morgan & Owens\, she received her doctorate from New York University\, writing a dissertation on nineteenth-century American anti-slavery literature and early photography.  The culmination of Girl in Black and White came from years of archival research through grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Antiquarian Society\, and from the Newhouse Center for the Humanities at Wellesley College.  These explorations took her through archives\, courthouses\, interviews\, and the Concord Museum collection uncovering all she could of Mary Mildred Williams’ untold story. \nMembers free\, Nonmembers $5.  Books available for purchasing and signing in partnership with the Concord Bookshop. \nTo register\, fill out the form below.

SUMMARY:Mary Lesneski Memorial Lecture and Reception: "'The Great Centre of Attraction’: Dolley Madison Creates the White House"
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Allgor\, President of the Massachusetts Historical Society\, presents the annual Mary Lesneski Memorial Lecture. Dolley Madison is famously credited for “redecorating” the executive mansion. It is more accurate\, however\, that Dolley Madison and architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe restructured the space in order to accomodate James Madison’s political goals. Dr. Allgor explores the political meanings and intent behind their decorative choices which not only transformed the president’s house\, but made the “White House” (as it became known under Dolley’s tenure) a national symbol. \nThis event is organized by the Concord Museum Guild of Volunteers to support the Museum’s education initiatives.  The lecture will be held in the Franklin Lyceum in the Rasmussen Education Center with a reception to follow. \nMade possible in part by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati. \nMembers $30; Non-Members $40.  Please register below.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Exile and Community: The Life of Carola Domar
DESCRIPTION:Carola Domar escaped Nazi Germany in her teens and came to the States\, where she married and built a new life in Concord\, finding true belonging within the unique neighborhood of Conantum. In this documentary film\, she and her daughter tell the story of her persistent search for community. A high-spirited\, resourceful person\, Domar yearned as a young Jew for the social acceptance and German identity she once took for granted. Domar’s story is all the more remarkable for the spirit of forgiveness with which she ultimately came to terms with her past and reconnected with her former homeland. Her story of exile and community has particular relevance in the context of current mass migration. \n  \nThis film screening and discussion with Carola Domar’s daughter\, Erica D. Banderob\, and the film’s producer\, Susan Orleans Rieder\, is presented in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) marking the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. \nFree. SUMMARY:Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence
DESCRIPTION:Wellesley Professor Kellie Carter Jackson\, author of Force & Freedom: Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence will discuss the tactical use of violence among antebellum black activists.  Through tactical violence\, argues Carter Jackson\, black abolitionist leaders accomplished what white nonviolent abolitionists could not: creating the conditions that necessitated the Civil War. \nForce and Freedom takes readers beyond the honorable politics of moral suasion and the romanticism of the Underground Railroad and into an exploration of the agonizing decisions\, strategies\, and actions of the black abolitionists who\, though lacking an official political voice\, were nevertheless responsible for instigating monumental social and political change. \nBefore coming to Wellesley College\, Carter Jackson was a Harvard College Fellow in the Department of African & African American Studies at Harvard University. She earned her Ph.D in American History at Columbia University working under the esteemed historian Eric Foner. \nFree. Register here.
