DESCRIPTION:11th Annual Sally Lanagan Lecture\n \nDr. Kelli Racine Barnes joins us to discuss the lives and experiences of Black girls during the late 1700s and early 1800s in the northeastern United States by examining the needlework they created.  By using material culture as primary evidence\, the needlework provides valuable clues about the lives of these Black girls in northern cities during the antebellum period.  Dr. Barnes highlights the importance of centering Black girls as historical subjects to better understand American history\, the history of education in the United States\, the history of sampler-making\, and the world history of embroidery. \nThis forum is supported in part by the Sally Lanagan Fund. \nFree Member | $10 Non-Member | Free Virtual \nPlease register using the form below.

SUMMARY:Object Spotlight Talk: Silk Shoe in the April 19th gallery
DESCRIPTION:Learn how a fancy silk and wool shoe connects to the important role women played in boycotting goods from England during the American Revolution. In the 18th century\, American milliners often imported fancy English shoes for sale to their customers\, but unpopular tax laws from the British government led colonists to protest by refusing to purchase items imported from England\, including textiles. Women pressured their families and communities to only buy goods made in the Americas\, and organized spinning bees to make yarn that was turned into clothes known as “homespun.” This spotlight talk highlights the involvement of women in boycotting campaigns\, and how this enabled them to express political views and support for the Patriot cause. \n\n\n\nAbout Object Spotlight Talks: During these brief talks\, Museum Interpreter showcase a fascinating story behind an item in the Concord Museum collections. \n\n\n\nTalks will take place in the April 19th gallery at 11:00-11:30 amFree with Museum admission | Members visit free. \n\n\n\nSilk Shoe\, London\, 1790. SUMMARY:Beaverland: How One Weird Rodent Made America
DESCRIPTION:Leila Philip\, professor of English at the College of the Holy Cross\, highlights how beavers played an oversized role in American history and how they can play an important role in its future.  Beaverland is a poignant personal narrative\, a startling portrait of the secretive world of the contemporary fur trade\, and an engrossing ecological and historical investigation of these heroic animals who\, once trapped to the point of extinction\, have returned to the landscape as one of the greatest conservation stories of the 20th century. \n \nProfessor Philip will be joined in conversation by Richard Primack\, Professor of Biology at Boston University\, whose research in conservation biology utilizes historical field notes from Henry David Thoreau and current observations to study how climate change affects the timing of seasonal biological events. \nRegister using the form below. \nFree for Members | $10 Non-Members | Free Virtual \nBooks are available for sale and signing thanks to our partners at the Concord Bookshop.
