SUMMARY:Film Screening: Exile and Community: The Life of Carola Domar
DESCRIPTION:Carola Domar escaped Nazi Germany in her teens and came to the States\, where she married and built a new life in Concord\, finding true belonging within the unique neighborhood of Conantum. In this documentary film\, she and her daughter tell the story of her persistent search for community. A high-spirited\, resourceful person\, Domar yearned as a young Jew for the social acceptance and German identity she once took for granted. Domar’s story is all the more remarkable for the spirit of forgiveness with which she ultimately came to terms with her past and reconnected with her former homeland. Her story of exile and community has particular relevance in the context of current mass migration. \n  \nThis film screening and discussion with Carola Domar’s daughter\, Erica D. Banderob\, and the film’s producer\, Susan Orleans Rieder\, is presented in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) marking the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. \nFree. Co-sponsored by Facing History and Ourselves. This program is supported in part by the Sally Lanagan Fund and grants from the Concord Cultural Council\, the Lexington Council for the Arts\, and the Lincoln Cultural Council –  local agencies which are supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, a state agency. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence
DESCRIPTION:Wellesley Professor Kellie Carter Jackson\, author of Force & Freedom: Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence will discuss the tactical use of violence among antebellum black activists.  Through tactical violence\, argues Carter Jackson\, black abolitionist leaders accomplished what white nonviolent abolitionists could not: creating the conditions that necessitated the Civil War. \nForce and Freedom takes readers beyond the honorable politics of moral suasion and the romanticism of the Underground Railroad and into an exploration of the agonizing decisions\, strategies\, and actions of the black abolitionists who\, though lacking an official political voice\, were nevertheless responsible for instigating monumental social and political change. \nBefore coming to Wellesley College\, Carter Jackson was a Harvard College Fellow in the Department of African & African American Studies at Harvard University. She earned her Ph.D in American History at Columbia University working under the esteemed historian Eric Foner. \nFree. Register here.

Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars\, New York Public Library.  His latest book is a new full biography\, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom\, published in October 2018 by Simon and Schuster.  Blight works in many capacities in the world of public history\, including on boards of museums and historical societies\, and as a member of a small team of advisors to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum team of curators. \n  \nAbout John Stauffer \nJohn Stauffer is a leading authority on antislavery\, the Civil War era\, social protest movements\, and photography. At Harvard University he is Professor of English and American Literature\, American Studies and African American Studies. His 19 books include The Black Hearts of Men: Radical Abolitionists and the Transformation of Race (2002)\, Giants: The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln (2008)\, and The Battle Hymn of the Republic: A Biography of the Song That Marches On (2013). SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Reenactment of a Meeting of the Provincial Congress 1774
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! Thank you for your interest in our Reenactment of a Meeting of the Provincial Congress 1774 in historic Wright Tavern.  Sign up for Summer Night Beer Tasting and Talk to get a taste of history in Wright Tavern! \nThe Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre have thrown the Massachusetts Bay Colony into chaos. By 1774 all representative government has been banned and General Thomas Gage is suppressing the rights of the colonists.  A group of brave and civic-minded colonists decides to meet anyway. They gather at the Wright Tavern in Concord to debate taxes\, their rights\, and how to respond to the outrages of the English Parliament. \nMuster up your colonial spirit and join us in a reenactment of a meeting of the Provincial Congress that led up to April 19\, 1775. Visitors will participate in the program\, engaging the debates that animated the colonists in the months before the beginning of the Revolution. \nThis program is in partnership with Minute Man National Historical Park and Revolution 250. \nFree to the public.  Due to the limited capacity in Wright Tavern\, please register here to guarantee seating.
