SUMMARY:Paul Revere: The Man\, the Myth\, the Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Paul Revere: The Man\, the Myth\, the Legacy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Revere’s legacy has been both elevated and obscured by his now famous ride\, 250 years ago on April 18\, 1775. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s dramatic poem replaced what actually happened with a much beloved romantic version. Nina Zannieri\, Executive Director of the Paul Revere Memorial Association\, and Robert Martello\, Professor of the History of Science and Technology at Olin College of Engineering\, shed light on the legendary ride\, the poem\, and the man behind it\, revealing the fascinating life of a fabled national hero who witnessed and helped to shape the birth of a nation.  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by the Paul Revere Memorial Association.  \n\n\n\nFree Members | $10 Non-Members | Free Virtual  \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Eyewitness to Revolution with American Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Eyewitness to Revolution with American Ancestors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis illustrated virtual talk will focus on the stories told by objects in the Concord Museum collection about the lead-up to April 19\, 1775\, and the epochal day itself. In the aggregate\, these stories contribute forcefully to an understanding that the Revolution\, the great turn from a monarchy to a republic\, was already over well before the day the Revolutionary War began. \n\n\n\nDavid Wood\, Curator of the Concord Museum\, has served at the Museum since 1985 and provides deep knowledge of the collection and Concord history. He has overseen the development of over 40 temporary exhibitions and galleries. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and publications\, including the award-winning An Observant Eye: The Thoreau Collection at the Concord Museum and Eyewitness to Revolution: The American Revolution Collection at the Concord Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by American Ancestors. Forums for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution are made possible by a gift from Claire and Joshua Nelson. Forums are supported in part by the Sally Lanagan Fund. \n\n\n\nThis program is entirely virtual and hosted by American Ancestors. SUMMARY:Open House and Reception for the 250th Student Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Open House and Reception for the 250th Student Art Show\n\n\n\n\n\nHigh school students from across the Commonwealth are creating artwork inspired by the “one if by land\, two if by sea” lantern at the Concord Museum as a symbol of the American Revolution and our nation’s continuing aspiration towards liberty and justice for all. All are welcome to a community open house to see the artwork and meet the artists. \n\n\n\nThe open house is free and no advanced registration is needed. \n\n\n\nInformation for Artists\n\n\n\nThe “one if by land\, two if by sea” lantern at the Concord Museum is a symbol of the American Revolution and the Patriot cause. Two lanterns were hung in the North Church in Boston on the night of Paul Revere’s midnight ride on April 18\, 1775\, the night before the first battles of the American Revolution in Concord and Lexington. These lanterns were the start of an eight-year war to create a new nation built on liberty and justice for all -an aspiration that people across the nation continue to stride towards today. \n\n\n\nArtwork can also be submitted for a juried review. Selected works will be included in a 250th exhibition at the Concord Museum. \n\n\n\nGuiding Questions: \n\n\n\n\nWhat do liberty and justice mean 250 years later as we mark the anniversary of the start of the American Revolution in 2025?  \n\n\n\nWhat does revolution mean to us today?\n\n\n\nAs an artist in the Concord community\, how do you want to inspire and instigate change\, lighting the way to a better future?\n\n\n\nHow do you\, through a work of art\, add insight into an issue and promote awareness in unique and powerful ways\, ensuring liberty and justice for all in our world today?  \n\n\n\nWho is typically remembered from the Revolution and how can artists broaden the diversity of people who are honored and remembered?\n\n\n\nLight is a starting point; we’re eager to see where you take this theme.\n\n\n\n\nContemporary Artists to Consider: \n\n\n\nTitus Kaphar\, Barbara Walker\, Ai Weiwei\, Shirin Neshat\, Kara Walker\, Lorna Simpson\, Yoko Ono\, Maya Lin\, James Turrell\, Olafur Eliasson\, and Anna Veronica Janssens. \n\n\n\nSubmission Instructions: \n\n\n\nStudents’ submissions will include final artwork\, digital photograph\, artwork title\, artist first and last name\, school\, and grade (we are only accepting works from high schoolers grades 9-12). Submissions should be sent to teachers and teachers should collect and forward all digital submissions to info@concordmuseum.org. All artwork should be delivered to the Concord Museum\, 53 Cambridge Turnpike\, Concord\, MA 01742 on March 4\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Chemacheg Menuhki: Paddle Strong
DESCRIPTION:Chemacheg Menuhki: Paddle Strong\n\n\n\nChemacheg Menuhki: Paddle Strong highlights local Indigenous history and contemporary artistic practices. Co-curated with Brittney Peauwe Wunnepog Walley (Nipmuc)\, this installation is now on view as an ongoing exhibition at the Concord Museum.  \n\n\n\nChemacheg Menuhki: Paddle Strong features Walley’s creation—a fiber basket—that draws on traditional Indigenous weaving techniques and highlights rarely acknowledged facets of regional history. Walley is a prominent emerging voice among Indigenous artists in New England\, particularly for her work in fiber arts\, her expertise on history and storytelling in Massachusetts\, and her advocacy for Indigenous communities. The iconography on Walley’s basket explores the little-known story of the 58 Nipmuc individuals housed on the property of John Hoar in Concord (known today as Orchard House and home of author Louisa May Alcott) in 1675-1676 before being forcibly moved to Deer Island in Boston Harbor\, where they were confined and many perished. Local Indigenous communities today commemorate the removal and resilience of their ancestors through time-honored ceremonies and paddling of the region’s waterways. \n\n\n\nA related media installation features a film of Walley created by award-winning filmmaker and educator Roberto Mighty. The film will highlights Walley’s complex creation process\, provides opportunities for close looking\, and further enhances how visitors learn more about contemporary Indigenous textile arts and the traditions passed down through generations of weavers. This installation offers an immersive experience that encourages deep reflection and engagement.  \n\n\n\nOpening Reception \n\n\n\n\n\nThe reception is full! Please come visit during our regular hours to view Chemacheg Menuhki. \n\n\n\nJoin us on May 9th for the opening reception to hear from the artist and to enjoy Indigenous food by James Beard Foundation award-winning chef Sherry Pocknett (Mashpee Wampanoag)\, a concert with flute musician Hawk Henries (Chaubunagungamaug band of Nipmuc)\, and a drum and song performance by Larry Spotted Crow Mann (Nipmuc). The event is free and open to the public\, but space is limited. Register in advance.  \n\n\n\nChemacheg Menuhki: Paddle Strong is funded by the Coby Foundation and funded in part by Mass Humanities.

DESCRIPTION:For the People\, For the Country\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 1799\, at the behest of President George Washington\, Patrick Henry came out of retirement to defend the Constitution that he had once opposed and to thwart Thomas Jefferson and James Madison\, whom Washington accused of putting party over country and threatening the fragile union.
