Job Title: Museum Shop Associate
Reports to: Director of Finance and Operations
Pay Rate: $18/hour
Coordinates all retail activities within the Concord Museum. The Museum Shop Associate is responsible for the overall performance of the Museum Shop whose principal goals are to provide revenue to the museum, offer a positive visitor amenity and extend the museum visitors’ experience by offering merchandise that expresses the Concord Museum’s mission, exhibits, and programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Museum Shop Associate’s specific duties will include, but not be limited to the following:
- Strategically plan long range goals that will expand income and maintain a healthy market niche and establish short term objectives to meet these goals
- Participate in the development of the annual budget and sales
- Review monthly, weekly and daily sales and financial
- Conduct an annual physical inventory
- Develop an overall store image through merchandise selection and creative visual
- Work with the Education and Curatorial departments to identify unique merchandise opportunities that will complement exhibits and programs within the Museum
- Work with the Director of Marketing & Communications to promote the shop with commercial advertising, museum newsletters and social media, local media attention, and in-store events
- Research and purchase new merchandise and maintain adequate inventory
- Develop a pricing strategy to guarantee profitability
- Meet and negotiate with sales representatives
- Attend merchandise trade shows and museum store association meetings as appropriate
- Develop and source proprietary products to provide additional income and enhance the visibility and stature of the Concord Museum
- Control inventory with the use of a Point of Sale system
- Partner with Concord Book Shop to stock book inventory and prepare monthly sales reconciliation.
Qualifications
The Museum Shop Associate should possess management experience in specialty retail or a museum setting. Additionally, a successful track record of researching and buying appropriate merchandise is required. S/he should be a self starter, detail oriented, and a team player. Specific qualifications for this position include:
- A minimum of 3 years retail management experience with demonstrated accomplishments
- A minimum of 3 years as a specialty retail buyer, preferably within a museum or cultural environment
- Ability to synthesize the institutional needs and translate them into retail opportunities
- Strong capacity for strategic thinking and planning
- An analytical background in sales performance and expense control
- Proficient in evaluating and interpreting sales and inventory reports
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
- Experience with point-of-sale system
- Strong organizational skills
This job is expected to be 6 to 8 hours per week over two days. Additional day and hours during peak holiday season and the upcoming 250th anniversary.
